She loves exploring the world with her sons and giving them big adventures, whether that’s hiking or skiing, sailing or surfing. She and her family spend the winters in Antigua in the Caribbean, where her boyfriend works as a yacht captain. The currency of Antigua is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD) more locally called “EC”.

Basically, it will take you just a few minutes on foot until you enter the city center. For an amazing island dining experience, you want to schedule a visit to the Island Beach Bar. Also known as Turner’s Beach Bar, located on Turner’s beach, it’s the perfect spot for delicious island cuisine. To the right (facing St. John's), the cruise passenger shouldn't miss a visit to the Redcliff Quay, which is connected to the Heritage Quay by a boardwalk along the south shore of the deep-water harbor.

It comes alive when there are cruise ships docked, and you can watch steel bands and enjoy other local entertainment as you browse. We’ve spent the last 3 years living in Antigua as a family and spending time in St John’s where the Antigua cruise port is located. Sara used to work on cruise ships and knows how important a port day is.  Sometimes you want to max out your time getting to know the country.

So whilst this includes less, it is a shorter trip and might be better time-wise, especially if you are not docked in port for long. If you are looking for a relaxed island tour without too much exertion then the Panoramic Antigua tour might be a good tour to consider. This tour allows visitors to see the best sights in Antigua, including two local towns Freeman’s and Liberta which are picture-perfect.

Shopping and Food

The modern cruise terminal provides travelers convenience as it is close to the town center, providing exploration opportunities beyond just cruise excursions. This colourful-lined street starts at the end of the cruise ship dock. This is one of the most prestigious tax-free shopping areas in the Caribbean with a variety of different shops to choose from.

Cruise ships dock in Antigua at St John’s Harbor, in the capital St. John’s, at the Redcliffe Quay and the Heritage Quay Complex which lie adjacent to each other. The docks lie bang in the middle of the town and are easily accessible from all 4 corners. Christopher Columbus spotted the island in 1493 and named it after a saint worshiped in Seville, Santa Maria la Antigua. But he didn’t land here; the island was not occupied by Europeans until 1632.

Cruise Ports in Caribbean and West Indies region

Discover Nelson’s Dockyard, which features gorgeous 18th- and 19th-century architecture but also buzzes with modern eateries and shops. On an Antigua cruise, explore St. Johns island beaches, snorkeling, and more. Many of the main St John’s attractions are easy to reach from Heritage Quay and can be easily explored on foot. Alternatively, passengers will find a taxi dispatch kiosk at the terminal which offers official taxi rates. Many taxi drivers will offer reasonable prices for transfers to the beaches and many of them make excellent tour guides for trips around the island. When you visit Antigua you won’t want to miss the white sandy beaches and clear waters of the Caribbean Sea.

St John, Antigua – Cruise Port Guide

This long stretch of white sand is teeming with attractions and is perfect for visitors coming off cruise ships. The port of Antigua is located in the island’s capital, St. John’s, and is situated in the West Indies, specifically in the Leeward Islands area of the Caribbean Sea. It can accommodate up to four large cruise ships at a time, offering passengers convenient access to numerous attractions and exciting activities within walking distance. Another island tour that sounds really fun is the 4 x 4 Island Safari tour which can be reviewed and booked via TripAdvisor. The tour is approximately 5 hours long and takes visitors to all the main sights in a zebra-striped land rover!

St. John’s is nestled in a stunning bay that offers spectacular views of the harbor and the surrounding hills. Antigua and Barbuda's Government has long-planned "to develop Fort James facility and its precincts into a daytime leisure activity to support the cruise tourism business". Following the project's completion, a water taxi service will be introduced to transport cruise tourists from Port St John’s to Fort James' facilities.

This is a definite must-see when visiting this island nation and is almost a rite-of-passage when exploring Antigua. While some of Antigua’s beaches may be a little overcrowded and busy, there are a few that aren’t, specifically, Half Moon Bay. Despite damage by Hurricane Irma, this island is still worth a day-trip.

P&O cruise ships dock at Jardim do Tabaco (JTAB) dock as well as at the Santa Apolonia Jusante (TPSAJ) dock, both of which are part of the Lisbon Terminal. Carnival cruise ships dock at the Jardim do Tabaco (JTAB) dock which is part of the Lisbon Port Terminal. Yes, cruise ships can dock in Antigua at the Redcliffe Quay and Heritage Quay terminals in St. John’s Harbor. The ships are docking with 2 – 10 dockings per week depending on the season. Antigua is a port of call for cruise ships headed for the Caribbean tours originating from the Continental United States and Europe.

St John’s is no exception to this and has the wonderful Public Market Complex. The first thing that greets you once you disembark from your ship is the beautiful metallic island tunes, played tirelessly by an island band at the piers exit. Most major cruise lines such as Carnival, the Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Princess Cruises, cruise to the island regularly. If you’re feeling particularly indulgent after a spot of luxury shopping, why not embark on a yacht cruise around the island of Antigua? There are several independent cruise charters that operate from the island, but one that is worth mentioning is the family-owned and operated Creole Antigua Tours.

It is incredible as they actually (when hungry) move much faster than you expect them to. When we went they seemed to enjoy the attention they were given when getting a little rub on their shell or neck. We love learning about the history of Antigua, and the best place to head to is the Antigua and Barbuda Museum. The Rec, as it is affectionately known, is now run-down and more of a relic than a sports field. However, as you walk in you can feel the atmosphere which helps to bring it to life this historic site. 📍 Stingray City and Laviscount Island – this fun half-day tour combines 2 of our favourite animal experiences; snorkelling with stingrays and feeding giant tortoises.
